Purpose of the Job:

We are looking for a skilled Assistant Mechanical Draftsperson to join our team at Nortech Systems Africa. You will be responsible for producing detailed mechanical drawings and 3D models for new and existing products, working closely with our engineering and production teams to turn concepts into manufacturable designs. This is a hands-on role suited to someone who enjoys solving practical design problems and seeing their work go from screen to shop floor.

Key Responsibilities

• Create and maintain detailed 3D models, assemblies, and 2D manufacturing drawings using Autodesk Inventor.
• Translate design concepts and sketches into accurate, manufacturable drawings and documentation.
• Work closely with engineers, production staff, and other stakeholders to refine designs for manufacturability, cost, and function.
• Produce and manage Bills of Materials (BOMs) and revision-controlled drawing packages.
• Support prototyping and testing, including the use of 3D printing where appropriate.
• Assist with the design of components and assemblies such as plastic injection moulded housings, aluminium extrusions, and sheet metal fabrications.
• Ensure drawings and documentation comply with relevant standards and internal quality processes.
• Supplier sourcing and vetting.

Qualifications & Skills:

• Proven competency in Autodesk Inventor – this is the most important requirement for the role.
• Strong mechanical aptitude, with a solid understanding of how mechanical components and assemblies function.
• Ability to visualize objects and assemblies in three dimensions from concepts or rough sketches.
• A logical, methodical thinker who can work through design problems systematically.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.

Desirable Traits:

• At least 3 years’ experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
• Experience working in a production environment, understanding manufacturing constraints and processes.
• Hands-on experience with 3D printers, ideally for prototyping purposes.
• Experience designing product housings and enclosures, including:
  Plastic injection moulded components
  Aluminium extrusions
  Sheet metal fabrication
